Education

Introducing the general public to marine science is a primary role of the Nereus Oceanographic Institute. The opening page of this website explains why:

'We need to understand the importance and the promise of the oceans that surround us. The future of Australia is hidden in the ocean. It is our last frontier.'

Spreading understanding of just what is the importance of our oceans and the promise they offer us is a role which the Nereus Oceanographic Institute takes on with pride and determination.

We need more people to be aware. From that awareness will come the marine scientists of tomorrow. But from it, too, will come the teachers to pass on the knowledge, the journalists who can interpret news of the oceans and pass on its significance, and the general public who will understand the steps being taken to harness the potential of the oceans, for the good of mankind, without jeopardising the marine environment.

It is a vital role.
